Media Strategies maps the complex and disruptive media environment
for the communication professional and provides the tools and
methods to work effectively within it. Increasingly, communication
professionals need to be accomplished content managers, capable of
employing an arsenal of multi-media tactics across different
platforms. The authors show how to target and package selected
media materials, and deliver strategically timed messages and
sustainable narratives in a digital environment. They also
demonstrate that personal and traditional skills are as important
as ever, including the ability to tell stories, create memorable
media calls, write and lay-out media materials, and develop
credibility and trust in relationships. This book provides new and
innovative approaches to media relations, brand journalism, and
content management, creatively combining paid, owned, earned, and
shared media in personalized and technologically savvy style. Media
Strategies sets a new agenda for anyone seeking to build a career
as a professional communicator. It includes examples from around
the world from corporate, political, government, not for profit and
activist communication, and public relations practice.
Public relations and the media are in a time of major change. The
rise of social media, altered media platforms, evolving legislative
environments and new models of communication have altered not only
the working environments of public relations and the news and
entertainment media, but also many aspects of how these industries
work together. Media Relations provides a practical and thorough
introduction to media work in this changing environment. Based on a
solid understanding of media culture and theory, Jane Johnston
shows how to steer a path between the technical and human elements
of media relations. She drills down into the different types of
media, analysing their applications, strengths and weaknesses, and
shows how to target your message to the right media outlets,
whether national television, community radio, celebrity magazines
or influential blogs. This second edition has been revised
throughout and includes new case studies, and new chapters on
digital and social media, media campaigns, and legal and ethical
considerations.
Communication has become the technology of public interest,
demanding a re-examination of the key concept of public in both
public relations and communication theory. This book defines a new
concept of public interest communication, combining the conflict,
negotiation and adaptation inherent in public interest, with a
critical approach to communication management and public relations.
Combining conceptual discussions about public theories of language
with the tension between the public and private interests for
public relations professionals, the book uses case studies to
explore the negotiation of conflicting interests and the
construction of the public interest within systems of governance at
local, national and international levels. Public interest
communication is identified within social and cultural contexts
that resonate globally - health, community, media and the
environment - each representing interest conflicts within the
changing global environment. Addressing the forces of
fragmentation, inequality and individualisation that characterize
the modern world, this thought-provoking volume will be of great
interest to researchers and advanced students of communication,
public relations, environmental communication, public
communication, and public policy.
Drawing on extensive data including news media reports and
commentaries, documentaries, courts and court reports, films,
websites, professional literature and government and non-government
agencies, this book explores the 'Alzheimerisation' of the
euthanasia debate, examining the shift in recent years in public
attitudes towards the desirability and moral permissibility of
euthanasia as an end-of-life 'solution' for people living with the
disease - not just at its end stage, but also at earlier stages.
With attention to media representations and public understandings
of Alzheimer's disease, Alzheimer's Disease, Media Representations
and the Politics of Euthanasia sheds light on the processes
contributing to these changes in public opinion, investigating the
drivers of vexed political debate surrounding the issue and
examining the manner in which both sides of the euthanasia debate
mobilise support, portray their opponents and make use of media
technologies to frame the terms of discourse. Paving the way for a
greater level of intellectual honesty with regard to an issue
carrying significant policy implications, this book will be of
interest to scholars of media and communication, social movements
and political communication, and the sociology of health and
medicine, as well as researchers and professionals in the fields of
palliative and end of life care.

intersections between CSR, governance, law and the public interest;
and how activism and social media have invigorated community
control of the public interest. Chapters explore the role of the
public interest, including cross-cultural and multicultural

Introducing a dramatic new chapter to American Indian literary
history, this book brings to the public for the first time the
complete writings of the first known American Indian literary
writer, Jane Johnston Schoolcraft (her English name) or
Bamewawagezhikaquay (her Ojibwe name), Woman of the Sound the Stars
Make Rushing Through the Sky (1800-1842). Beginning as early as
1815, Schoolcraft wrote poems and traditional stories while also
translating songs and other Ojibwe texts into English. Her stories
were published in adapted, unattributed versions by her husband,
Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, a founding figure in American anthropology
and folklore, and they became a key source for Longfellow's
sensationally popular The Song of Hiawatha. As this volume shows,
what little has been known about Schoolcraft's writing and life
only scratches the surface of her legacy. Most of the works have
been edited from manuscripts and appear in print here for the first
time. The Sound the Stars Make Rushing Through the Sky presents a
collection of all Schoolcraft's extant writings along with a
cultural and biographical history. Robert Dale Parker's deeply
researched account places her writings in relation to American
Indian and American literary history and the history of
anthropology, offering the story of Schoolcraft, her world, and her
fascinating family as reinterpreted through her newly uncovered
writing. This book makes available a startling new episode in the
history of American culture and literature.

This is a complete guide to supporting physical development in the
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), promoting a holistic approach
and drawing on examples of good practice. "Physical Development"
introduces this area of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to
trainee and qualified early years professionals. The physical
development of children aged between 0-5 years is introduced within
the context of the EYFS. A balanced approach to the Early Learning
Goals is encouraged ensuring that key principles of good early
years practice are maintained and developed, and the holistic
development of the child is promoted. This user-friendly guide will
support early years professionals to: reflect on current practice
and develop skills; evaluate the implications of research for early
years practice and provision; promote interdisciplinary teamwork
between those who work with and support young children; meet the
diverse needs of children at different developmental stages and
ages; and support children as they move within and beyond the EYFS.
This series introduces each of the six areas of the Early Years
Foundation Stage (EYFS): Personal, Social and Emotional
Development; Language, Literacy and Communication; Problem Solving,
Reasoning and Numeracy; Knowledge and Understanding of the World;
Creative Development; and Physical Development. Each book delivers
accessible yet rigorous support for practitioners, whether training
or qualified, in developing their professional understanding and
practice in each of these Early Learning Goals. Whilst considering
each area in turn, the aim throughout the series is to promote the
holistic development of the child. Each volume includes: an
introduction to the key area; consideration of the development of
children in the key area from birth to 3 years; 3 to 5 years; and
into 5 to 7 years; consideration of the holistic development of the
child and the impact of that development on the key area being
discussed; research evidence to support practice; practical
examples of good practice; discussions on leadership in the key
area; and support in the development of pedagogical skills and
reflective professional practice. In line with the aims of the
EYFS, this series will help you in meeting the challenges that come
with supporting the different needs of children, working in
multi-professional partnerships, balancing the different areas of
development, and supporting transitions within and beyond the EYFS.
By its very nature, nursing ethics is a subject that the profession
is required to constantly grapple with. The history of writing on
this topic offers a fascinating insight into how nursing as a
profession has developed over time and reacted to the ethical
issues and questions raised around the role of nurses and their
interactions with patients. Nursing ethics has not always enjoyed
the status that it has today. Its development, legitimation and
recognition as a distinctive field of inquiry have been an arduous
project and one which has not always been well documented. These
three volumes will redress this oversight via the systematic
identification and inclusion of foundational and leading works on
nursing ethics which have influenced the international development
of nursing ethics as a discourse and practice. The collection is
categorised and sorted thematically into three volumes to enable
clear navigation and understanding of the material. An introduction
to each volume written by the editor frames the set, providing
guidance and context. Volume 1: Developing theoretical foundations
for nursing ethics Volume 2: Nursing ethics pedagogy and praxis
Volume 3: Politics and future directions of nursing ethics

Tell me all you have been doing. Best respects to your Aunt and
Captain Landless.1?Your affectionate husband, George Johnston. Mrs
Johnston, Easington House, Belford. Wednesday, lgth April 1820. My
dear Catharine, ?Dr Clark came here to-day at five o'clock, and
intends staying all to-morrow. He goes to Melrose on Friday
morning, and thence home. He is very vexed at not seeing you, as he
says he came chiefly for that purpose, and I am so, too, for I am
too proud of you not to wish to show you to my friends. But you
must not come home, as he makes so short a stay. I walked a mile
and a half to meet Clark, missed him, and found him on my return,
at my fireside. He was very weary; he had ridden from Winterfield,
near Dunbar, this morning. I breakfasted with Mr Young this
morning; there were present Mr Sworde and Mr Balmer. At Mr Laurie's
last night, the same company as above, with Mr Bland, from the
neighbourhood of Paisley. Addison Steavenson's2 dinner party was
put off until to-morrow, and I cannot go.? Thursday, April 2Oth.
Clark is at this very moment copying a letter from your album. He
goes away to-morrow. He sends his very best compliments, and is
sorry he has missed you.?Yours affectionately, GEORGE JOHNSTON. Mrs
Johnston, Easington House, Belford. 1 Captain William Landless,
R.N., Mrs Johnston's uncle by marriage with Margaret Charles, is
thus mentioned by Lord Collingwood in a letter to Lord Barbara,
dated 28th March 1806. "Lieutenant Landless, the only person I
recommended to your Lordship, is an old and a valuable officer; he
has followed me from ship to ship, all the war. A complaint which
he had in his eyes prevented his going into the ' Sovereign' when I
removed, a few days before the action; but I did hope that my
earnest recommendation to your Lor...
